Australia has some very unique environments and highly valuable agricultural markets. And these could be ruined if unwanted pests, diseases, and/or weeds were allowed to hitchhike with unsuspecting tourists, and enter restricted areas.
Travelers face on-the-spot fines for taking prohibited items across state and quarantine borders within Australia.
There are many restrictions on what you can and can’t take with you, so it’s always a good idea to check any restrictions that might apply to your trip.
Check state-by-state restrictions by visiting the Domestic Quarantine website before you travel!
If you’ve got restricted produce on board that can’t be taken across a border, you’ll be asked to “bin it”… so if you really want it, then eat it first 🙂
Please follow the rules about moving these items before you travel:
- plant or plant products
- fruit and vegetables
- animals or animal products
- soil
- agricultural machinery and other equipment
- recreational equipment
